Thursday music corner: Robert Lee ‘Bobby’ Parker (1937-2013) released his best-known single Watch Your Step in 1961. Born in Louisiana but raised in Los Angeles, Parker paid his dues playing electric guitar for Bo Diddley and touring with a wide range of artists including Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and the Everly Brothers. Watch Your Step was inspired by both Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Charles, and went on to chart in the mid-ranges of the Billboard Hot 100. The song was popular in England too, and was covered by many British beat groups including the Beatles and the Spencer Davis Group. It was clearly the inspiration for the intro to the Beatles’ 1964 hit I Feel Fine, and John Lennon later indicated that it also inspired Day Tripper from the following year.
